DOT Physical Guide

    What Disqualifies a DOT Driver?

Understanding what can temporarily or permanently disqualify a driver helps you prepare and fix issues before they slow you down.

Conditions That May Trigger Deferral or Disqualification

You may be temporarily deferred or disqualified if you have:

    • Uncontrolled high blood pressure (above 180/110)
    • Poor vision (worse than 20/40 even with glasses or contacts)
    • Serious hearing loss (unable to hear a forced whisper at 5 feet even with hearing aids)
    • Uncontrolled diabetes with complications (like severe neuropathy or uncontrolled blood sugars)
    • Untreated sleep apnea (without proof of CPAP compliance)
    • History of seizures (unless well-controlled and cleared)
    • Recent heart attack, bypass surgery, or serious arrhythmias without cardiology clearance
    • Drug or alcohol abuse (current or recent)

When You Need a Specialist Letter

Some medical conditions aren't automatic disqualifiers — but you must show proof from a specialist saying you're safe to drive.

    Heart problems

    Cardiologist letter + stress test

    Diabetes on insulin

Endocrinologist or primary doctor letter + A1C report

    Sleep apnea

Pulmonologist letter + CPAP compliance data

    Vision or hearing issues

    Eye doctor or audiologist evaluation

    Tip

Bring your specialist letters to your DOT exam to avoid delays!

What Happens If You Don't Pass?

If the issue is fixable (like high blood pressure), you'll usually be deferred temporarily and can retest once corrected.

If a specialist letter is needed, you'll be given instructions on what documentation to submit.

In some cases, you may qualify for a short-term medical card (like 3 months or 1 year) while following up with your doctor.

We work with you to help you pass once the medical issues are properly managed!
